Breakcore Reviews

Gore Tech - Machine Throne

Insert pic of the album here later btw

The breakcore artist known as Gore Tech is a fairly unpopular one, which is unfortunate. Several of their albums are quite good, and I recommend you listen to them all, but for this review, I will be focusing on their second EP, Machine Throne.
Machine Throne is a very short album, consisting of four tracks and being only around 20 minutes in length. Luckily, each one of those tracks is a very high quality one. In the short few tracks they're given, they manage to fit in an incredible amount of content. These tracks feel intense, whether it be the more traditional breakcore seen in Dubwar or the vocally assisted Rivers of Hades Remix. The EP is a very solid one, with all of its tracks being high-quality pieces made with care and is able to pack a high amount of quality in a short EP.

The actual sound of the EP is hard to characterize. There are several albums, such as the classic From Rotting Fantasylands by Nero's Day at Disneyland, that sound similar, but no clear influences or shared styles. This EP is different enough from the rest of the pack to be called "original". The best description I can give is that the music sounds dry, almost devoid of melody. However, there is still quite a high usage of synths, though they sound quite odd, almost drill-like. The entire EP feels like they made a breakcore EP based entirely on chainsaw sounds and strange noises. The EP uses vocals almost as part of the beats, such as in The Plague of Zion and the Rivers of Hades remix.

The only real complaint I have with the EP is that it's far too short. Normally, this would be a moot complaint, but the EP is just 20 minutes. That is a ridiculously low amount of time, and it certainly isn't worth the asking price of £5 GBP (or, for the Americans, 6$). Ultimately, if you really love the tracks on this album, it's worth buying, but at that price point I would rather not.

All in all, the album is a seriously high-quality outing into less melodic breakcore that deserves a place on the top of the genre, but a restrictive price brings it down slightly. The score I would give it is a 8/10.
